Home / All Bamwor Indexes / IBCP — Bamwor Population Concentration Index What this index measures The Population Concentration Index measures the degree of urban concentration by calculating the combined population share of the five largest cities. A score of 50 means half of the country’s population lives in just five cities. This metric reveals whether a nation’s population is heavily urbanized in a few major centers or spread across many settlements.
Methodology Sum the populations of the five largest cities (from GeoNames) and divide by the country’s total population (from CIA World Factbook). Multiply by 100.
Formula IBCP = (Σ top_5_cities_population / country_total_population) × 100Variables used Sum of top 5 cities’ population (GeoNames) Total country population (CIA World Factbook) How to interpret Higher values mean population is heavily concentrated in a few major cities. Lower values mean population is distributed across many settlements.
Limitations Uses GeoNames city population data which may not match latest census figures. Only considers the five largest cities, not metropolitan areas. Small countries may show inflated values.
