The initial sighting by an English navigator occurred in 1592; however, it wasn't until nearly a century later, in 1690, that the first English landing took place. The first French settlement was founded in 1764. Two years later, the colony was ceded to Spain, and the islands have since been embroiled in a territorial conflict, initially between Britain and Spain, followed by disputes between Britain and Argentina. The United Kingdom reinforced its claim by establishing a naval garrison in the islands in 1833. In 1982, Argentina launched an invasion of the islands. The British government responded by deploying an expeditionary force, which, after intense combat, compelled Argentine forces to surrender on 14 June 1982. Following the cessation of hostilities and the withdrawal of Argentine troops, British administration was reinstated. In light of Argentina's renewed demands for the UK to cede control of the islands, a referendum took place in 2013, with an overwhelming 99.8% of voters choosing to remain part of the UK.

the archipelago derives its name from the Falkland Sound, the waterway that divides the two principal islands; this channel was named in recognition of the Fifth Viscount of FALKLAND, who financed an expedition to the islands in 1690; the Spanish name for the archipelago originates from the French "Iles Malouines," which translates to Islands of Malo, a designation given by French explorer Louis-Antoine de BOUGAINVILLE in 1764 in tribute to the French port of Saint-Malo.
