Home / All Bamwor Indexes / IBCX — Bamwor Country Complexity Index What this index measures The Country Complexity Index produces a composite score (0–100) that captures how structurally complex a country is. It combines four dimensions: population size, territorial extent, number of populated places, and number of administrative divisions. Large, populous countries with many cities and provinces score highest. Small, simple territories score lowest.
Methodology Each of the four variables is log-transformed and min-max normalized to a 0–25 range across all countries. The four normalized components are summed to produce a final score between 0 and 100. Logarithmic scaling prevents extremely large countries from dominating the scale.

Score 50–80: Moderately complex. Score 20–50: Simple structure. Score 0–20: Very small or simple territory.
Limitations Log normalization compresses differences at the top of the scale. Province counts depend on GeoNames admin1 data availability. Equal weighting of all four dimensions is a simplification.
