Mexico — Transnational Issues
Mexico faces significant transnational challenges, notably in illicit drug production and refugee management. Identified by the USG as a major illicit drug-producing and drug-transit country, Mexico is also projected to become a major producer of precursor chemicals by 2025, highlighting its pivotal role in global drug trade networks. Furthermore, Mexico's humanitarian obligations are underscored by the presence of 417,546 refugees and 390,250 internally displaced persons as of 2024 estimates, marking it as a crucial player in regional migration patterns. Despite these challenges, the country continues to address issues of statelessness, with only 13 stateless persons recorded in 2024. These figures demonstrate the complex socio-political landscape that Mexico navigates, influenced by both internal dynamics and external pressures. The country's strategies in managing these issues are critical to its regional and global standing.
